Frequently Asked Questions
What should I expect from my cosmetic dental visit?
Due to great strides in dentistry, cosmetic, restorative and general dentistry can overlap in a single visit. Here at Riverdental our Dentists will discuss health implications as well as aesthetics at your initial appointment.
Am I a candidate for cosmetic dentistry?
You may be a candidate for cosmetic dentistry if your healthy teeth have imperfections that you would prefer to have changed to enhance the appearance of your smile. It is important to recognize that aesthetic dental treatments are not meant to alter your overall appearance drastically, but rather to provide a positive change that complements the health and natural appearance of your teeth.
What types of cosmetic treatments are available to me?
There are many types of cosmetic treatments available, from in-house teeth whitening to a total smile make-over. The types of treatments available will depend on your concerns and overall goals. This could include professional whitening, tooth colored fillings, veneers, orthodontics, dentures or dental implants.
One of the greatest advantages of the dental veneers treatment is that it allows us to treat multiple dental concerns at once. If patients have a number of problems, for example, discolouration and uneven, oddly shaped teeth as well as perhaps a small gap between the two front teeth, veneers will be able to transform the appearance of the whole smile.
Did you know…
that dental veneers are a conservative way of completely making over your smile? In fact, veneers are a go-to cosmetic procedure that has become popular with celebrities who want a brighter and more symmetrical smile. Miley Cyrus, Hilary Duff and Ben Affleck are just some of Hollywood’s elite who have seen a cosmetic dentist for veneers. Fortunately, affordability and accessibility make it easy for anyone to get dental veneers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Am I a candidate for dental veneers?
Veneers can help you if you have gaps between your teeth or teeth that are broken, chipped, irregularly shaped or misaligned. To find out more about whether dental veneers are right for you, call Riverdental to schedule a consultation.
What should I expect when I get my dental veneers?
Before dental veneers can be placed on the teeth, the surface of the teeth must be prepared for bonding. After administering a local anesthetic, your dentist will buff away approximately half a millimeter from the surface of the teeth. You’ll then bite into a mold that will be used to form your veneers in our dental lab. When the veneers are ready, we will reschedule an appointment to have them fitted, bonded and adjusted for shape and color.
Will I need to follow any post-treatment care instructions?
There is no special care required for dental veneers, and normal brushing and flossing can be resumed immediately. Because veneers are usually placed over the course of two appointments, it is normal to experience some sensitivity between the first and second visit when the teeth have been reduced in preparation for bonding.
Do you have dull, yellow or discoloured teeth? Teeth whitening can dramatically whiten and brighten the appearance of your smile and greatly enhance your overall appearance.
Did you know…
Teeth naturally darken as we age! Furthermore certain foods, beverages, medications and habits can contribute to a darker, yellowed or stained smile.
Teeth whitening procedures are used to brighten the appearance of a patient’s smile and depending on the type of product, up to 2 to 3 lighter shades are achievable. Professional teeth whitening services can be performed in a surgery (zoom) or prescribed for take-home use by a patient (custom made or disposable trays). In comparison to over-the-counter teeth whitening treatments, professional whitening uses stronger whitening agents that deliver faster and more effective longer term results under the guidance of our dentists or hygienist.
Frequently Asked Questions
Am I a Candidate for Teeth Whitening?
Some patients, such as those who are pregnant or sensitive to whitening agents, may not be candidates for professional whitening.
What Should I Expect When I have My Teeth Whitened?
This will largely depend on which option is best for your individual requirements.
Your results will vary according to the natural shade of your teeth and degree of discolouration, but it is normal for patients to experience a lightening at least two shades.
What Type of Post-Treatment Care is Required After Having My Teeth Whitened?
It is normal to experience some tooth and gum sensitivity during a professional whitening treatment. This sensitivity is temporary and does not result in any permanent damage. If you suffer from tooth sensitivity whilst whitening we are able to recommend a product to help.

Several treatment options are available for people who have chipped, cracked, or worn teeth.
The most commonly used correction methods include veneers and bonding. These options present durable, cost effective alternatives to more expensive crowns and involve bonding a porcelain or resin material to a damaged tooth. The restoration is then sculpted and polished to the desired shape. These methods can be used to fill in cracks, even out chips, or build up worn down teeth. They can also be used to close gaps or disguise discoloured teeth that do not respond well to whitening procedures.
Direct bonding is a relatively straight forward though precise procedure that can usually be accomplished in a single visit. Indirect veneers are custom made and thus stronger and longer lasting, but the process requires more time and more than one appointment. Caring for either bonded teeth or veneers will still require good oral hygiene at home and regular examinations by your dentist.
