Dentures

A denture is a removable appliance constructed to replace teeth that have been previously lost or extracted and is designed to look and function similar to normal teeth. The denture is taken out to clean and it may replace all of the teeth (full denture) or some of the teeth (partial denture).

There are two types of dentures, one being made with a hard plastic base and the other having a stronger metal base. The overlying teeth can be made out of either a hard acrylic or porcelain. Many dental patients choose dentures for tooth replacement if they are not candidates for bridges or dental implants. They may also prefer a tooth replacement option that is more affordable and budget-friendly.

Caring for Dentures

Dentures are custom designed to fit in with the person’s optimal smile. Dropping a denture may result in it breaking and excess heat such as boiling water can cause warping. Most removable dentures must maintain moisture to retain their shape. Washing them after eating, gently cleaning them once daily and allowing them to soak overnight in a denture soaking solution is important for correct maintenance.
