If a tooth is broken or a filling is lost call us as soon as possible and we will arrange an appointment.
The tooth may be sensitive to hot, cold and/or sweet things. Avoid chewing in this area. Any sharp areas may also be annoying to your tongue. If possible place a small amount of soft wax on the tooth. This may provide temporary relief from cutting the cheek or tongue.
If a tooth is knocked out of position by trauma or has been knocked out of the socket completely, contact us immediately.
If the tooth is completely out of its socket, it is important not to let it dry out. Gently rinse the tooth under running water (do not scrub, scratch or rub the tooth or root) and place the tooth in milk, saline or the person’s own saliva. There are times when a tooth can be re-implanted and saved if done quickly. If a dentist cannot be contacted immediately, the tooth has a much better outlook if you are able to reinsert the tooth back in its socket as quickly as possible. If the tooth is a baby or first tooth do not attempt to place the tooth back in its socket (or else you may end up damaging the underlying permanent tooth). Always keep the tooth and take it with you when you see the dentist.
Pain when you bite or chew, especially if it is accompanied by a foul odour or a bad taste, can be a sign of a tooth abscess. Infections causing swelling can also develop in other areas of the face and neck.
An abscessed tooth can cause an unrelenting and/or spontaneous pain that may last hours at a time. The pain may or may not be triggered by irritants such as pressure, heat or cold. Often there is swelling and you may experience pain when swallowing. In this event call us as quickly as possible as abscesses and other infections often develop and spread rapidly.
If you have lost a crown or veneer, put it in a safe place and avoid things that make the tooth hurt such as chewing, hot and cold.
In some instances we are able to recement the crown or veneer without having to make a new one. We recommend you contact us as soon as possible for re-cementation or to place a temporary crown before any movement of the adjacent teeth occurs. The longer treatment is delayed the more complicated the treatment may become.
